Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, 2nd Edition
by Steve Krug
Amazon Price: $26.40
Customer Review: Yes, this is an entry-level book, targeted at the people who need it most: the frontline of Web developers and "designers". The content of the 2nd edition could be updated, but Krug's non-nonsense, easy-to-read approach still makes Don't Make Me Think one of the first books I recommend to my Web development students.

Influencer: The Power to Change Anything
by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, David Maxfield, Ron McMillan, Al Switzler
Amazon Price: $16.47
Customer Review: In general, I am not easily impressed by these business books that purport give some great insight into how to make things work. If somebody really had the ability to "change anything" then he wouldn't be wasting time writing books, he'd be out there changing things, if not for the better, then to his advantage. With that caveat in mind, however, I have to say that I enjoyed this book.

JavaScript: The Good Parts
by Douglas Crockford
Amazon Price: $19.79
Customer Review: I have to wonder if the positive reviewers actually read much of this, it's so surface. This book will neither teach you javascript nor interest the experience programmer for more than about 15 minutes.
The money could be much better spent on a truly useful book.

by Eric Freeman, Elisabeth Freeman
Amazon Price: $26.39
Customer Review: I teach college courses on Web development that emphasize Web standards and usability. This is one of only two entry-level (X)HTML + CSS books that I will recommend to students.
"Head First.." is a fun and lively book that is very much aimed at ordinary folks who are having a hard time figuring this stuff out. It's pleasurable scenarios and tongue-in-cheek humor push learning toward ...
Programming Collective Intelligence: Building Smart Web 2.0 Applications
by Toby Segaran
Amazon Price: $26.39
Customer Review: most people have shared their thoughts on the good of this book. I like to point out some of the bad as I read through:
- first, too many typos - both the author and oreilly should do a better job on proof read the materials. the typos are so much that it can easily wreck otherwise good materials.
- second, arcane solution and coding style. Many first step to the solution...

Amazon Price: $29.67
Customer Review: I love this book. It is my first Head First book and I intend to buy more. It is really a fun way to learn. Though the book deals with some advanced topics, the way the material is presented makes it easier to get into your brain.
My suggestion is to pick up one of these books in a book store, skim through it to get the idea of where they're coming from, then buy the book from Amazo...
